GLOBAL ICONOGRAPHY FOR THE GOPRO ECOSYSTEM

my rolE

I was project lead on RINCON. It was my responsibility to define the need, requirements and budget. It was also the first time in GoPro design a collaborative project was introduced that would impact several areas of the GoPro ecosystem. I was held accountable to align these groups and stakeholders so it would achieve success.

SITUATION

A global initiative to launch an updated suite of Iconography for the GoPro ecosystem was needed. By the time of HERO4, GoPro had a legacy icon library that was becoming antiquated, and as the suite had grown there were no set guidelines to follow in which to create new icons. This led to icons that were not weighted evenly, had complicated metaphors, had multiple versions implemented and followed no grid or structure.

A team was formed from three main areas of GoPro where icons had the most influence, Hardware Design, Software Design and Brand Creative to create a suite that aimed to possess these goals:

  1. MAKE IT CONSISTENT

  2. USABLE

  3. RESPECT GOPRO LEGACY

TASKS
  • Find a specialist who designs icons

  • Gain Executive approval for project and budget - See Executive Proposal

  • Define scope of icon needs

  • Create a suite that contained a solid/stroked version in various formats

  • Create a guideline that can be utilized for the expansion of icon needs

  • Implement into GoPro Ecosystem

ACTIONS

Set schedule for reviews, approvals and deliveries. Drove requirements for specific department use cases to be incorporated into the suite. Provided Designer with these characteristics on what GoPro Icon Language should be:

  1. FLEXIBLE

  2. TIMELESS

  3. MINIMAL

  4. CONSISTENT

Provided collaborative creative direction to the designer between all stakeholders within the project. Distributed suite to teams to be implemented through GoPro ecosystem.

RESULT

The end result was a suite of over 250+ icons we named RINCON. RINCON held true to our defining goals and characteristics we had put forth for the project. And additional bonus that grew out of this project's effort was the formation of new team at GoPro called OneDesign. OneDesign was a cross collaborative effort to build a consistent ecosystem in visual language throughout GoPro. RINCON became an establishing product from that teams initiative and inspired the team to create a direction that was implemented alongside the icon suite.
